[Beta] Enhanced AI Document Classification
[Beta] Enhanced AI Document Classification

Automatically classify documents using AI. TrustLayer now intelligently assigns documents based on your workspace document types.

Updated this week

Note: This feature is currently in Beta. If you’re interested in enabling it for your account, please reach out to your Customer Success Manager or Support.

Let AI Handle More of the Sorting

When a document doesn’t match one of TrustLayer’s standard types, like an ACORD or W-9, it used to be marked as “Generic Document”.

Now, with Enhanced AI Document Classification, TrustLayer uses AI to automatically check if the document fits one of the document types available within your workspace. If it finds a likely match, it assigns the type automatically, saving you time and reducing manual classification.

What This Feature Does

  • Runs automatically on all newly uploaded documents

  • Attempts classification only if no standard document type is detected

  • Compares content and structure of the document against your custom types

  • Assigns a custom document type when a confident match is found

  • Falls back to “Unknown” only when no likely match is detected

When and Where It Works

This classification logic is triggered automatically after each document upload.

You’ll benefit from this feature if:

  • Your workspace has at least one custom document type defined

  • A document doesn’t match a standard TrustLayer-recognized form

No additional setup is needed beyond configuring your custom types.

How to Add Document Types

To define custom types that the AI can use:

  1. Go to SettingsDocument configuration

  2. Click + New document type

  3. Name your document type and add a description.

Once added, these types will be included in the AI’s classification checks for new uploads.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need to manually configure or train the AI?

A: No. The AI automatically uses your existing custom document types as part of its classification process.

Q: What happens if no match is found?

A: The document will still be labeled as “No document type,” and you can manually assign a type from the document review page.

Q: Can I override the classification?

A: Yes. You can always manually reassign a document type, regardless of how it was initially classified.

Q: Does this feature apply to previously uploaded documents?

A: Not at this time. It only applies to documents uploaded after the feature is enabled.
