Applies to: TrustLayer Admins and users reviewing COIs (compliance teams, risk teams, vendor onboarding, renewals)
Issue/Question: How can TrustLayer read and process endorsement pages that impact coverages and overall compliance?
1. Quick Answer
Enhanced Endorsements is TrustLayer's AI-powered compliance feature that automatically detects endorsements — like Additional Insured, Waiver of Subrogation, and Primary & Non-Contributory — even when they're buried deep in a policy, written in non-standard language, or placed in document locations that traditional extraction would miss.
Unlike traditional extraction (which looks for data at specific spots on standard forms), Enhanced Endorsements searches the entire document and understands the meaning and context of language. Every match comes with visible AI reasoning — your team can see exactly why a requirement passed or failed, and on which page it was found.
Note: Enhanced Endorsements works alongside traditional extraction — limits, dates, policy numbers, and carrier names still use standard extraction. It's not all-or-nothing.
2. Step-by-Step Setup & Usage Instructions
Part 1: Setup (For Workspace Admins)
Step 1: Request Activation
To enable Enhanced Endorsements for your workspace, contact your TrustLayer Customer Success Manager or reach out to [email protected].
Once enabled, enhanced endorsement requirements will be available in your compliance profile editor.
⚠️ Important: Enabling Enhanced Endorsements makes your endorsement requirements enhanceable — it does not automatically turn on AI evaluation for existing compliance profiles. You control which requirements are activated and when.
Step 2: Activate Requirements on Existing Compliance Profiles
For any compliance profiles created before Enhanced Endorsements was enabled, you'll need to activate AI evaluation on a per-requirement basis. This gives you full control over your rollout.
Recommended approach: Start small, then expand
Pick one compliance profile to start with (e.g., your standard CGL profile).
Choose 1–2 requirements to activate first (e.g., Additional Insured and Waiver of Subrogation).
Review results on a few documents (see Part 2 below for how to read AI reasoning).
When you're confident, activate more requirements across more profiles.
You can turn individual requirements on or off at any time — there's no risk to trying.
In the Compliance Profile Editor located in Workspace Settings:
Open your compliance profile.
Locate an existing endorsement requirement or add a new requirement using our defaulted options (look for the “info” icon next to the requirement) to add it to the compliance profile.
Click the down arrow or dropdown menu to the right of the requirement and select Enhanced.
Repeat for each requirement you want to activate.
New compliance profiles: If you create a new compliance profile after Enhanced Endorsements is enabled for your workspace, all 26 endorsement requirements are enhanced by default — no manual activation needed.
Step 3: Process Existing Documents (Optional)
New documents uploaded after activation are automatically processed with Enhanced Endorsements — no action required.
For unreviewed documents already in your workspace: Your CSM can request a bulk re-evaluation run that processes all unreviewed documents against the enhanced requirements. Contact your CSM to schedule this.
For already-reviewed documents: You can re-evaluate them one at a time using the Re-evaluate Requirements button (see Step 6 in Part 2 below).
⚠️ IMPORTANT: Enabling this feature will not impact already-reviewed documents. Only newly uploaded documents will be impacted.
Part 2: Daily Usage (For Reviewers and Admins)
Step 4: Understand the Sparkle Icon
When reviewing a document in TrustLayer, you'll notice a ✨ sparkle icon next to any requirement evaluated using Enhanced Endorsements.
✨ + passed (green): The AI found the endorsement and is confident it satisfies the requirement.
✨ + failed (red): The AI searched the full document and did not find sufficient evidence of the endorsement.
Step 5: View the AI's Reasoning
You don't have to take the AI's result on faith. To see exactly what it found and where:
In a document review, locate a requirement with the ✨ sparkle icon.
Hover over the sparkle icon.
A tooltip will appear showing:
The AI's explanation of why the requirement passed or failed
The page number where the relevant language was found (for passing requirements)
This lets your team quickly verify AI decisions without reading through the entire document manually.
Step 6: Re-evaluate a Document
If a document's compliance status looks incorrect, or if you've updated a compliance profile and want to recheck an existing document:
Open the document in TrustLayer.
While on the the document review page, click More (or the actions menu).
Select Re-evaluate Requirements.
TrustLayer will re-run Enhanced Endorsements using the current compliance profile settings.
When to use Re-evaluate:
A document was reviewed before Enhanced Endorsements was enabled
You've updated a compliance profile and want to apply the changes to this document
You believe the AI may have missed something and want a fresh evaluation
Part 3: Advanced — Custom Guidance (For Workspace Admins)
The 26 Enhanced Endorsements requirements come with expert-built AI instructions. In most cases, no customization is needed.
If your organization has unique compliance rules or specific language variations the AI should recognize, workspace admins can add their own Guidance in the compliance profile editor:
Open the compliance profile editor.
Select the requirement you want to customize.
Navigate to the Guidance tab.
Write instructions describing what should pass, what should fail, and any acceptable variations.
Tip: Good guidance is specific. Rather than "check for additional insured," write out the exact phrasings, endorsement formats, and edge cases the AI should accept or reject. See our Writing Effective Guidance Prompts article for a full tutorial.
3. Troubleshooting & FAQs
Question: “Does Enhanced Endorsements replace traditional extraction?
Answer: No — it works alongside it. Traditional extraction still handles limits, dates, policy numbers, and carrier names. Enhanced Endorsements handles the 26 endorsement requirements listed above.”
Question: Why does my existing compliance profile require manual activation?
Answer: This is intentional. It gives you rollout control — you can enable AI evaluation on a few requirements first, review the results, and expand at your own pace. New profiles are enhanced by default.
Question: Can I turn Enhanced Endorsements off for a specific requirement?
Answer: Yes. You can toggle any individual requirement on or off at any time in the compliance profile editor.
Question: What happens to my manual overrides and waivers?
Answer: They are preserved when Enhanced Endorsements is enabled. Your existing decisions are not affected.
Question: A document shows as non-compliant but I believe it should pass — what do I do?
Answer:
Hover over the ✨ sparkle icon to read the AI's reasoning.
If you believe the AI is incorrect, use the Re-evaluate button after confirming the document contains the correct endorsement.
You can also change the compliance by clicking the "Edit" button and manually marking the requirement as present and compliant.
If the issue of the AI being incorrect persists with your other documents, contact your CSM — the system guidance may need a refinement for your specific document type.
Question: I have a lot of unreviewed documents — can they all be processed at once?
Answer:
Yes. Contact your CSM to request a bulk re-evaluation run. This processes all unreviewed documents in your workspace against Enhanced Endorsements.
